i guess i'll start off some mass nominations of random people off the top of
my head who i think would do a good job ... there's a bunch more people i
think would do a good job, but i'm going to cut my list short as it's already
ridiculously long ...
from current council:
koon / agriffis / azarah / seemant / solar
some other peeps:
Kugelfang / Ramereth / Mr_Bones / spb / plasmaroo / Weeve / `Kumba /
jaervosz / KingTaco / Flameeyes / dostrow / dsd / kito / exg
i'd also nominate g2boojum, but i kind of like his current unofficial role as
honorary council adviser guy ...

I nominate SpanKY, vapier and Mike Frysinger.
Maybe they have enough on their collective plate already, but maybe one
of them can accept...

Two names I see missing from this (otherwise very good) list are Chris
Gianelloni (wolf31o2) and Donnie Berkholz (spyderous aka dberkholz). I
think everyone knows exactly how much work these two put into Gentoo and
how valuable that contribution is. Their knowledge would be a great
addition to the council.

Curtis,
I really appreciate your bringing my name up. But I want to take a year
to rediscover the reasons I joined Gentoo in the first place and the
things I joined it to do, so I'm going to decline this for now. Maybe
next time around. =)
Thanks,
Donnie

Hi all,
I would like to nominate:
Grant Goodyear (g2boojum)
Chris Gianelloni (wolf31o2)
Mike Frysinger (vapier)
Michael Sterrett (mr_bones_)
George Shapovalov (george)
Xavier Neys (neysx)
I would also have proposed Donnie Berkholz (spyderous), but he already
declined nomination.
Cheers,

Thanks for the nomination. I don't have enough time especially as I'll
be doing my first full-time placement for a year. Maybe I'd consider it
in the future.

As you're nominating and voting, please keep in mind that council
members should be highly competent and experienced in the technical
aspects of Gentoo as well as our philosophies. The former is the primary
realm in which their decisions lie and the latter is the basis for them.
Thanks,
Donnie

I would like to refrain from accepting until just before the final
nominees are put out, as currently my life is pretty much in flux. If
possible that is.

Senior will be happy to accept. Unlike last year, when I didn't run, I will
have more time this year as my Ph.D. thesis is now finished, and I'm only
waiting for formal approval.

Thanks for the nomination, but I can't accept it. I don't have enough
time to devote to Gentoo those days so I can't commit to following
all/most discussion subjects for the Council job for another year. Maybe
sometime in the future ?
There are plenty of good/better candidates out there. I second the
nominations for plasmaroo, jaervosz, Kugelfang and Weeve.

*Grin* I'm rather fond of that role myself, so I cheerfully accept the

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to put a few thoughts out there as people contemplate
nominees and the elections for the Gentoo Council. I personally am on
the fence about running this year, because I think there are a lot of
talented people who *should* be on the council.
Now that I've said that (the "*should*" bit), let me expand on its
meaning a little. I think the Council idea is great. However, I think
the Council should be charged with a little bit of direction-setting and
leadership as well. In the past year, the council did make some
decisions, and helped to mediate some controversial issues.
There were a couple of things which I thought were lacking, however:
1. The council was (by design?) a reactive force, rather than a
pro-active force.
2. There's no way to follow through on the Council's decisions.
I think these points involve *every* gentoo developer (and would-be
developer) and not just the Council. If you have a GLEP or an idea and
it gets approved by the council, now what? That's the thing: follow
through on it! A question is, perhaps, should the council follow-up with
previously approved GLEPs and inquire as to status updates?
For an exemplar of the way I think the council should be is
Spanky/vapier. Solar also does this well. Both of them take a
leadership role in general in the project and are generally respected
and admired for it. They both have great ideas and a vision. I think
that should be explored further. This project needs some leadership, as
the events of the past few months show fairly clearly.
Thanks for listening,

Agreed. We could decide we do not elect the council members based on
their coding skills or any other type of technical skill. But instead
have the nominees do some campaigning before the elections, and make
direction-setting propositions for the coming year.
Another thing that bothers me is the possible overlapping between
council members, trustees and devrel. I wouldn't mind at all that any
dev could only be one of these at most at the same time. I know that
resigning from a position won't end the relationship between you and
your ex-fellow devs from the group you've just quit, but at least
functionally the link doesn't exist anymore. Plus, taking into account
that we have a life outside of gentoo, and that these functions are
the critical ones, having only one of these positions means a better
chance to be efficient.
Denis.

I've been thinking about this and still am on the fence. At least I
have a couple more weeks to think about it, but thanks to everyone who

I accept the nomination. But I can't add more nominees as
all my favorites for the council have been named already ;)
On the other hand, this means, I won't be available as
trustee any more (I don't think, that I have enough time for
both boards). But as I have not been nominated yet, things
look good...

I'll be happy to accept the nomination, noting that I can't participate
in any kind of appeals board if any devrel decision is ever appealed to
the council.

Council vs. Trustees.
These mails were a reply to a (hypothetical?) trustee nomination while
Mike's webpage lists nominations for the council.

Hi,
I know I haven't been around a huge amount lately, I'm getting married
in a month, so I've been a bit busy. However I would like to run for
Council - with a specific eye towards getting the tree signed and
verifiable.
I have been working on the issue, and I've got a set of proto-GLEPs that
I need to polish off and post up for discussion. For the most part,
we're closer to doing it than realized by most, and the work required on
the part of each developer isn't large at all. Most importantly, the
base part of it is accomplished simply with the collaboration of the
Portage crew and Infrastructure - more details to follow soon.
I'm not certain if it's good to be a one-issue candidate but
adding security to the tree is something that presents a major gain to
Gentoo.

These are two different things. The nominations on *this* list are for
the Council. The nominations on -core/-nfp are for the Trustees.

Actually, I'm about to respond to this, since I've reconsidered it, but
I'll be doing so on the proper lists. ;]

After mulling it over for a bit I think I could actually do some good
here. Plus another name in the hat makes the elections that much more
interesting....as my campaign pledge I promise to establish a developer
juice bar (I tried for the ice cream machine but the lactose intolerance
lobby is just too powerful), to extend developer vacations to include
alternate Thursdays, and to establish National Larry The Cow Day...my
people are still talking to the small transgender cow lobby to pinpoint
the exact day/month...you'd be surprised sexual presentation is not the
only thing that transgender cows have a hard time making their mind up
about. The long and short of it...I accept.

I would like to thank nattfodd for nominating me, and although my
curiosity makes me interested in the council and how it works, I feel I
would need to refrain from accepting the nomination at this point. I
don't believe I've been around quite long enough to get a good idea of
all the ins and outs of Gentoo as of yet. Maybe next year. :)

I'd like to nominate Andrej Kacian (ticho). He's quite a silent dev
(speaking about -dev and -core flamefests :) ), so chances are that he
won't go bananas. He also wrote nice articles about his hiking
activities so I think he'll be a good candidate, now from the CZ-SK
conspiracy :)

While honored to be possible considered to be able to help guide the
technical direction of gentoo. I however don't feel that I'm capable
of it at this time. Too many other things are taking my time within
the project. It'd be fun to see how low I'd be on the voting scale but
as if I was to somehow miraculously far enough up on the list to be
elected, I'd not be able to accept that position.

Arrr me mateys!
err, that's not until Sept. 19th....my bad. Reading over the current nominees,
the field looks pretty varied. It'll be a fun race. So I suppose I'll throw my
hat into the mix to make the race even more fun!
My campaign pledges:
- Pikachu Petting zoo (great for kids)
- Cement mixer in the lavatory (don't ask)
- Orange sherbert dispenser in the lounge (after we expand it to
accommodate all the other proposed vending machines)
But the best is for last: A MIPS Roller coaster!
- 4 different styles of roller coaster with 3 separate tracks each
- One track will be simple, yet quite mundane, another semi-functional,
but a bit unstable, and the third wholly untested.
- They'll range in size from some of the biggest coasters you've ever
seen to some being embedded in the lounge (after expansion, of course)
- All the parts will be requisitioned from eBay, so the price should be
quite cheap.

Thank you, Jan, but I have to respectfully refuse the nomination, as
the council simply isn't what I'd like to be part of in Gentoo. I'd
rather keep working only on the portage tree, with whatever little time
I currently have for it, continuing to ignore Gentoo politics.

I'll accept the nomination. Thanks Mike for considering me for the
council! Sorry it took me so long to decide on this. I wanted to make
sure that if I went for this that I could actually do something good and
have proper time for me.
My little blurb...
* Try to maintain/improve the image/developer community we have
* Try to be unbiased in my decisions and keep it to technical merits
* Try to make the right decisions for Gentoo and its developers and
users at large
One of my primary roles if I do get elected would be to ensure that
infra/other parties gets a proper opinion/word into the council since we
are so closely tied to the community. I know that I may have made some
troublesome decisions in the past year or so, but I promise to keep to
my word and help make Gentoo better for all.
Cheers-

Thanks mike but I'm still undecided. A part of me wants to say no to a
year long commitment yet another part of me wants to take it on. I for
sure wanted to put this off till the last possible moment as I have to
tend to a few things in my personal life.

I'd agree that my availability over the past 6 months has been spotty at
best. I was ramping up for a cross country move and all that that
entails as well as dealing with a new position at work which was keeping
me more busy then I thought I could have been. While I'm willing to
state that I will be around more from here on out as I'm done moving and
have settled into the routine that my job requires I believe that my
prior record of availability (as it is all you have to go by) should
certainly be taken into account. Thanks for bringing this point up
solar. I'd still like to be considered as I believe I have a lot to
offer but when you all are voting it should be something you are
thinking about.

I don't know the basis for your statement, but I'm quite
good around.
Is it that you don't see that many emails from me here at
this list? Or is it that you don't see me hanging out in
#gentoo-dev all the day?
Keep in mind, that Gentoo is a quite large project. Usually
I hide in the PowerPC department or in it's subsidiary for
release engineering (the coffee over there is better!). CVS
and SVN are both working, so that I don't have to go out for
lunch with the infra-team. But in the evenings I join the
German community and keep an ear on their demands.
But I'm also open letting some youngsters in Gentoo join the
council. There are currently some good names on the
nominations-list. In the end it's the decision of the
developers who they want to see as council.
Regards, Lars

Guess I could do a lot worse than "nice guy" :) I haven't been part of
the council before so it's a bit difficult saying if it's a good fit or
not. But I'd certainly do my best to improve Gentoo if I'm elected.
I think just about everybody knows my work by now and know that I care
deeply about Gentoo. Who knows, maybe I care too much? Or care about the
wrong things? Fortunately, that's up to the general developer community
to decide just as it should be.
Let's hope we get the best possible council and that we'll continue to
see Gentoo improving.

Neither actually. It's cuz I don't bump into you in that many channels.
When I don't bump into people very often it's hard to think that they
are around and will have a clear picture of whats going on in gentoo
world outside of what we usually see on the lists.

I'm one of those damned Americans. Perhaps that's why our paths don't
cross that much outside of infra. None the less you are defiantly
somebody I respect and I wish you the best of luck.

I can change that text to read.. (pretty kick ass guy but still dunno)

I've seen and dealt with you mostly on new recruits and people
retiring.. Bit of devrel stuff.. More people oriented vs
technical work. I know you also work on the alpha's but that seems
more bump here bump there kinda of work.
You are around a lot (which is key), and you are pretty personable.
Still I have mixed feelings. I think perhaps you would make a
kick ass trustee.

I'm the alternative. Vote well or you'll have to live with me :-)
I hope that this motivates _everyone_ to vote ...
On a more serious note, I hope this mailinglist doesn't degenerate into
a political campaign. To paraphrase Chris (wolf31o2), "Let developers do
what they can do best ... develop". If anyone has an agenda, a plan,
some good ideas - please speak of them, but please don't start a huge
flamewar that doesn't change a thing. People have had a long time to
form their opinions and won't be swayed easily. Especially not with
logic ;-)
If you are crazy enough to vote for me (I've been told that such people
do exist) you should be aware of the consequences. Well ... I'm an
opinionated person. Some say biased and uncompromising, but I don't like
those pretentious wank^Wpersons. I'm usually me, most of the time a
perfectionist, so I usually stay away from anything I might break. As a
consequence I don't maintain any ebuilds for now - I never found the
time to really give them the care they need. Then again I've been called
lazy :-)
With this I end my speech, I thank the audience for their patience and
hope noone got bored with my meandering and neverending deluge of
words.
Sleep well and don't forget to vote if you can! Your vote is important!

Is that "no fucking chance" or "no fucking clue"? I might agree to both :)
I'm quite a young dev (joined last fall) and though I hang quite a bit
on #gentoo-dev and try to follow -dev, I don't speak that much. I am
involved in userrel though.
If I nominated myself, it's because I think that I have things to say
and I feel that I can help make gentoo better. As there was a nice
message from seemant encouraging people to step up, I did.
That said, I don't have much illusions on the outcome of this election,
at least for me :)

Thank you very much for the nomination. However, I am currently happy
whenever time allows me to keep up my regular duties for the Gentoo
project. I would not do a good job on the council. Maybe another year
