Afternoon list,
Another new developer to tell you about. Stefaan joins us from Leuven,
Belgium, and will be maintaining the OpenAFS ebuilds. He's an competent
C++ programmer, and although he has used other languages in the past,
C++ is the language he feels most comfortable with.
Stefaan is currently working for a Ph.D. in electrical engineering,
specifically, in image processing. He's been producing real-time
algorithms for 3D reconstruction and spending time on transferring
image data between between different nodes of a cluster, amongst other
things.
Outside of his research and work, he hasn't really contributed to many
public projects besides OpenAFS. He has, however, created a "running
contest monitor" program. On a 500 metre track, twenty teams run a relay
for 24 hours -- the team who has completed the most laps at the end of
the 24 hours wins. The people who started the project had made some
hardware to act as infrared transponders, in order to track the runners.
The software keeping track of the transponders was a Visual C++
application limited to just that PC. Stefaan has implemented more
efficient tracking software, and has integrated a webserver, a java
applet showing estimated positions of runners on the tracks,
visualisation in opengl on TVs placed around the track, and that kind of
thing. Stefaan describes it as "Quite a bit of fun, really."i
Stefaan plays the piano, and has been attending singing and viola
lessons for about a year. He has also been going to Chinese classes for
three years. He is interested in circus acts, and is able to use a
diabolo and fold balloons, and understands the knack behind rotating
paltes, juggling, devil sticks and that kind of thing. He can even ride
a unicycle, provided he has some support -- "at least a finger!" Using
these skills, he's helped in organised children's holidays. He says that
he enjoys entertaining them, with or without circus acts. Stefaan also
has a girlfriend that he is very happy with. She isn't interested in
computers that much, but he says that they both complement each other
very well. Coincidentally, they met at a viola lesson!
So, with that, say 'hi' to Stefaan on IRC and do your best to welcome him
to the team.
Tom

Yes!! We (net-fs) had been in dire need for someone to work on OpenAFS
for quite a while.
Nice to have you with us, Stefaan.
Cheers,
Maurice.

How can I commit them to the ebuild tree?

Start a bug at bugs.gentoo.org and attach the ebuilds. If they're not
related make separate bugs. We'll review the ebuilds and then
developers willing to maintain the packages can add them to the tree as
long as there's enough user interest.

We don't (or at least shouldn't...) give out CVS to people just for a
few ebuilds. If you contribute a lot of high quality stuff then someone
may offer to mentor you.

Teach you the thing you need to know to become a developer. How CVS
works, the full story on ebuilds, how to properly quote and reply to
emails, that kind of thing. Once you've been mentored for a while
you'll get the chance to do the quizzes. After that you might be given
CVS access.

So what iss the alternative? maintainer-wanted@ is really
unsatisfactory for people that want to contribute. Do you think
someone will just commit all his work?
I think we should either give cvs access to everyone who wants to
contribute or define some standard way where developers can review
contributed ebuilds and fix them so that they can get into portage
easily. And actualy get into portage or some kind of repo and not the
bugzilla.
But as defining new ways to distribute/review ebuilds is not so easy I
think it is atm best to let everyone take the quizes and use cvs who
wants to contribute ebuilds to gentoo.
So who wants to mentro him? :)
Forrest, where are the ebuilds anyway so that we can have a look at them?
Regards,
Stefan

Yeah right. Have you had a look at the ebuilds currently assigned to
maintainer-wanted? I count maybe three dozen out of six hundred that
pass basic QA checks. The tree is already full of crap, do you want to
lower the bar even further?
Face it, ebuild writing is *not* an easy job, and getting as many
things into the tree as possible is a stupid goal. I'd rather see a
tree half the size that was properly maintained than a huge and
unusable tree.
Or would you like to trust anyone who can stick their hand in the air
with root access to your box? Because that's what you're proposing.

If you want to you can test it. I still have some dependency issues
with player/stage. This is a standalone program.
You can test it by running:
wxgazebo /usr/share/gazebo/worlds/example.world
Look at that directory and try out the other worlds if you want to.
Thanks,
Forrest

Some things to start with:
* LICENSE is incorrect.
* A lot of those dependencies are optional and should be handled via
USE flags.
* If the current src_compile were all that was needed, you could remove
it.
* You probably shouldn't use einstall.
* You should remember to install the README, TODO, AUTHORS, ChangeLog
files using dodoc.
* Your spacing is kind of peculiar. The occasional blank line won't
kill you.
I've not tried actually using the ebuild, these are just syntax things.
Any dependency issues you mention will also need to be fixed.
Anyway, it's better to do this kind of thing through bugzilla rather
than clutter the mailing list up with lots of ebuild revisions.

There is no fidonet stuff in the portage tree. I can write ebuilds for
that. To get fidonet system worked user needs mailer, tosser, reader.
Those programms in logic can not be added to existent categories. So I
want to add four new categoies to portage tree:
ftn-mailer, ftn-tosser, ftn-reader, ftn-stuff.
But I'm not sure if I submit these ebuilds to bugzilla somebody wants
to commit them to cvs.
So do I have chance to become gentoo developer and get access to
CVS? And does somebody want to mentor me?
