[gentoo-dev] Acquiring a deeper understanding of Gentoo

Good day.

I am about to embark on a serious project and I am considering Gentoo
as the platform.  My luck with installation, on which I've spent several
solid days, thus far has been mixed, and I'm willing to hold off believing
it's not just me.  I suspect Gentoo works, but thus far just not for me.
But I see the promise it holds.

Is there a principal Gentoo developer in Northern or Southern California
(preferred) to whom I can pay a visit to gain a deeper understanding of
who the Gentoo team is, what they are trying to accomplish, and how?

If you have any questions, I am sure the mailing list or developers on
IRC would be glad to answer you... However, you might have a hard time
finding a dev to make a housecall.

There is a learning curve, but on the whole gentoo is my distribution of 
choice.  You may find it helpful to do a stage3 installation before you
attempt a stage1 installation.  Vanilla stage3 installations take much 
less time and give you the opportunity to learn the process.

(some of us not involved with catalyst type builds still start with stage3 
most times ;)

Those of us definitely involved with catalyst type builds always start
with a stage3, since it saves a lot of time and the end result is no
different once you've made your customizations and run an "emerge -e
world".

Besides, we spend enough time building from stage1 over and over and
over again for each release.  Why do it again on our machines when we
install?

I just checked out the developer list [1], and it surprised me how few
people we have in California now. One I might call "principal" is Jeremy
Huddleston, who's at Berkeley. But I don't want to volunteer him for you. =)

There are also a few of us farther up the coast at Oregon State or
around that area, including Corey Shields and me.

Also it's worth noting that none of us are doing this full-time, so you
wouldn't be visiting a Gentoo office or anything like that -- more like
somebody's home.

I suspect you'd have more luck via either e-mail or phone.

Well, it seems to work for quite a few people.  The best method for
installation is to follow the Gentoo Handbook to the letter.

Gentoo does not have "principal developers" in the sense that you might
be accustomed to, as we are all given equal rights within Gentoo.  We
are all volunteers, and not paid employees of some company.  There also
is not much in the way of a single direction that guides Gentoo, as we
are a metadistribution, designed to allow our users to use Gentoo in the
manner that they see fit.  We have developers that are specifically
dedicated to working on Gentoo in the enterprise.  We have developers
dedicated to improving Gentoo in the embedded space.  We have developers
dedicated to gaming on Gentoo.  We have developers dedicated to Gentoo
as a desktop.

The real question that needs to be asked is what do you want Gentoo to
do for you.

I'm not a developer ... and I'm not in California ... but I am a Gentoo
bigot and I'm certainly willing to help out ... as are most Gentoo
users/developers. The documentation and forums are excellent, as are the
IRC channels.

As far as installation is concerned, the complexity pretty much depends
on whether you want to dual-boot with some other OS and whether or not
you have a floppy disk drive :). If you don't want to dual-boot and you
have a floppy, you can do the whole install (stage1 or stage3) from
shell scripts on the floppy and just sit and watch.

It gets a little trickier if you only have a CD; you have to boot the
install CD with the "docache" option, then unmount it, load your install
scripts from a CD, then put the install CD back in to copy the stage3
tarball and Portage snapshot. If you have two CD drives, it gets simple
again :).

The most complex case is if you want to preserve an existing OS. First,
you have to back it up, so if you nuke it, you can restore it. Then you
have to move partitions around, etc. But once you've got the hard drive
partitioned the way you want it, everything else is automatable.

I know that I can't speak for all the developers, but I for one am

Windows) and it works for _them_, then so be it...
