I'm also still not convinced that this is really against the FHS. I think this could be a border case that just falls in or out the FHS. The FHS forbids direct children directories of /usr, but /usr/kde/3.3 is not a direct child. Maybe it is not in the exact spirit of FHS, but as far as I know the FHS people have also not offered any sensible solution for kde, qt etc. yet.
