It would help if you mentioned which arch you're talking about...

Hello!

Is there any reason why the Compaq SmartArray series controllers
are not supported by the LiveCD kernels?

Almost every RAID, SCSI, FCAL, etc. controller is supported
but cpqarray.o and cciss.o are both missing which makes it
quite hard to install gentoo on a machine that has such an
array as the system disk.

Regards,
Szabolcs Rumi

True. I'm talking about x86 and the universal LiveCD 2004.2.

I have used Knoppix 3.2 and 3.3 to rescue data from a dead WinNT RAID using
the cpqarray module. Maybe you could do similar to install Gentoo?

Which LiveCD are you referring to exactly?

Also, it would be a good idea to file a bug on this and assign it to
livecd@gentoo.org so it gets fixed for the next LiveCD.

Also, boot with the SMP kernel. It has support for the Smart Array
family. We apparently missed it on the 2.4 kernels.

The SmartArray on Compaq and HP-servers are supported on LiveCDs even before
2004.0 came out and every version after that (including current). From both
2.4 and 2.6 kernel you can access the SmartArray. You don't even need to add
a boot option during the boot of the LiveCD (unless you want to boot a
2.6/smp kernel). You can access the "logical drives"
as /dev/discs/discx/partx
