sys-apps/portage-2.0.50-r10
The problem is with those make.default and use.default file on that profile,
if you remove them, everything backs to normal. Seems like a bug to me :(

portage-2.0.50_pre20 no longer does fetching as root. Make sure that
the /usr/portage directory also has write access by the portage group and it
should work.
> [Why did I installed a pre version of portage ... ~:( ]
There may be a couple of hiccups(sp?) but it should be smooth running after
working them out.

Ermm.... This is a RO-NFS shared distfiles and the file was already fetched.

Thanks. I've reverted to 2.0.50-r10 until those hiccups are fixed ;)

Is ccache not being used (though defined in FEATURES) one of these
hiccups?
I am currently merging xorg-x11-6.7.99.904 and ccache is not used.

link to /usr/portage/profiles/gcc34-x86-2004.2/
this flat profile should let you do anything
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004/2/gcc34 does (no not */2.6)
at least until i get an official answer if 2.0.50-r10 is even meant to
work with the cascaded profiles

ok, seems there is a bug in 2.0.50 parsing cascaded profiles, the
make.defaults files are adjusted to this, thanks to jstubbs
please sync 35 mins after reading this mail and test with your portage
2.0.50-r10
thank you
Daniel

Get out the paddles, that one is my fault. I've filed a bug for it-
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62985
and corrected it in cvs. Basically it was a typo in the fetch function,
that by luck slipped by- instead of
if fetched != 2:
Which tests a var that reflects the files status (fully fetched,
partially, or non-existant), it was
if fetch != 2:
Kind of entertaining... it was comparing the fetch function against an
int :)
> Thanks. I've reverted to 2.0.50-r10 until those hiccups are fixed ;)
I attached a patch to #62985 that should fix things up for you. If it
doesn't, please post to the bug. Note this only affects readonly
distdir's, so general userbase shouldn't hit it.

It fixed it.
nbensa@venkman ~ $ emerge --version
