If anyone brave would like to play around with improved syntax
highlighting for ebuilds, eclasses and GLEP documents (and at some point
in the future when I figure them out, Gentoo style ChangeLogs)...

http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/overlay/app-vim/gentoo-syntax/

Chances are you'll have to re-emerge vim-core, etc-update and accept the
changes to /etc/vim/vimrc before these will actually work. (For those
who care, using set filetype= in a global configuration file is a bad
idea, since it can't be overridden from plugins... Using setfiletype is
the correct way to do things.)

The ebuild/eclass syntax file should be fairly clean, the GLEP one is a
mess and rather incomplete since vim doesn't particularly like that kind
of syntax... Patches encouraged.

A much improved updated version is now in the main tree. I strongly
suggest that anyone using vim to edit portagey things gives it a go. As
well as giving you better syntax highlighting for ebuild keywords, it'll
pick up certain mistakes and make them really stand out:

Suggestions, patches, etc welcomed. Smartarse remarks about emacs or
nano will lead to a smiting.

The following still applies if you've got a not-so-recent vim-core:

very pretty'n'all & mb this is a complaint re Portage,
but 'licence' is not a mistake: it is the way non-Americans spell 'license'.
in fact, the English distinguish 'licence' (noun) from 'license' (verb).
Canadians follow English usage when they think about it
& American when they don't ... (smile)

Well that's the point. I speak Real English (TM), so I keep on screwing
up the LICENSE variable by spelling it correctly. In the context of an
ebuild, using the non-USian spelling *is* a mistake.

yes, so isn't the solution to have ebuilds recognise both spellings ?
Gentoo is an international project, not like M$ etc .
gentle suggestion to developers ? bug report ?

Do we really need to waste time and effort on something this trivial?

I think the solution is for everybody to deal with it, personally.

I've just released a new version (20040901). Changes include:

* Support for Gentoo ChangeLogs (see [1] for an example, top is default
vim behaviour, bottom is new behaviour)
* Better GLEP syntax
* Better error highlighting
* Some new eclasses on the supported list

Help is available in vim via :help gentoo-syntax .

Feedback would be much appreciated, especially since I'm trying to
persuade devrel to mention this package in the docs [2] in place of
their existing horridly broke setup.

If it doesn't work straight off, try re-emerging vim-core and running
etc-update.
