I have to "me too" this request as well; since there aren't any current
problems with mysqlcc, I'd at least want it hanging around until a
replacement (MySQL's Administrator & Query Browser) has been added.

Have you tried phpMyAdmin?
emerge phpmyadmin
It's a rather excellent webapp for managing MySQL. Needs apache+php.

Thanks Tom, but I'm specifically trying to avoid web-based apps and
their (obvious) dependency on a webserver. I need a stand-alone app I
can use from my laptop to manage a number of unrelated databases at
various locations.
Also, I really like^H^H^H^Hneed the multi-window approach of MySQL CC,
which is difficult to easily replicate using a web-based system.
I was going to try dev-db/mysqlnavigator, but I'm not encouraged by the
broken homepage, missing metadata.xml, and latest release date (March
10, 2003). At least the sf page still works!
Cheers

Why would you require someone to install apache just it admin mysql?

If he's just after admin'ing, I would wonder why he hasn't tried
mysql-administrator ...
If he's after running queries, well, cli mysql works rather well, course
it can be a pita.

I wouldn't ever *require* anyone to install apache to admin mysql. It was a
*suggestion*.
Reasons for suggesting phpMyAdmin are:
- It's a very slick tool.
- MySQL is often used as a database with Apache & PHP. Therefore is possible
that Apache+PHP might already be installed.
- I have Apache installed on my desktop PCs normally anyhow: it's a very
easy way to transfer files between boxes.
- It's a webapp, so the client (browser), server (apache+php) and database
server (mysqld) can be three different computers. You might be able to use
apache+php already installed some else.
So perhaps my response should have been:
"If you have Apache+PHP installed (or don't mind installing it) then check
out phpMyAdmin. It's a great tool for administering MySQL databases."

My appologies. We were on the wrong track then thats all.

The above sounds great.. I have apache installed but not on any of my db
servers here.. One I don´t allow connections to other then localhost.. So I
have to have mysqlcc or the like..
Hopfully they will get mysql admin or whatever its called in an ebuild..
Let me know, I will write the ebuild and submit it..

On second thoughts, I retract that request, based on the following:
"Q: Is the current version of MySQL Administrator stable?
A: No, this is the first Alpha release of MySQL Administrator, a
completely new product from MySQL AB. Since it has only been tested on a
limited number of machines, it is very likely that there are
undiscovered bugs.
So it is not recommended to use MySQL Administrator in a production
environment at the moment."
http://www.mysql.com/products/administrator/faq.html
Who knew that alpha products could have version numbers greater than 1!
The MySQL Query Browser (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/query-browser/)
is also alpha, so it looks like I'll be sticking with MySQL CC for now
(unless I find something equal/better), even if Gentoo do drop it from
portage.
Cheers

That's a reason not to drop it. On the other hand, development stopped
upstream, so it will be removed at some time. I suppose you're using 0.9.4,
since there are bug reports regarding 0.9.3?

Yes, I use 0.9.4. According to b.g.o, there are only 4 open bugs against
mysqlcc (http://tinyurl.com/5lojj):
#41794 (dev-db/mysqlcc-0.9.3 missing files and segfaults) appears to be
fixed in 0.9.4, according to the comments (I never encountered the bug
myself, even under 0.9.3).
#57726 (mysqlcc failed to build) hasn't affected me.
#29689 (mysqlcc returns error during table creation about missing
syntax.txt at $HOME/syntax.txt) has an easy workaround, which only has
to be performed once.
#57308 (mysqlcc crashes strangely) hasn't affected me, since our tables
remain static. That said, this is a rather serious bug, and I can see
why you would like to remove mysqlcc from portage.
It is indeed unfortunate that the MySQL team (upstream) have dropped
support for their older products, while simultaneously claiming their
replacements (MySQL Administrator and MySQL Query Browser) are not ready
for production use.
Cheers
Andrew
