Hiya,
If you are on the To: list, that means that one or more package that you
maintain is affected by this proposal.
Please send all replies to the list only!
We're looking to *completely* remove the burgeoning 'net-www' category and
replace it with a set of new categories:
www-apache - for apache & it's plugins
www-apps - for web-based applications (general dumping ground)
(expect to break this up at some point in the future)
www-client - for web browsers, plugins, and other 'clients'
www-misc - dumping ground for stuff that doesn't run under a webserver
www-proxy - for proxy servers
www-server - for all web servers that aren't apache
Some of the packages currently under 'net-www' will be moved into one of the
'dev-*' categories.
You can find the list here:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~stuart/www-split.txt
Please take a look, and let me have your feedback.
Best regards,
Stu

I'm fine with you moving middleman to www-proxy.. I'd like to note that
jasonmc (author) is no longer developing this software as an OSS project
(think it's been changed to squidguard). While it's stil vuln free I'd
like to leave it in portage. But when somebody find a vuln and we have
no clear option for upgrading I'll probably remove it from the tree.
I do have admin access to the sourceforge site if any changes are
needed..

www-misc net-www/squidalyser Y cyfred
www-proxy net-www/adzapper Y cyfred
www-proxy net-www/squid N cyfred
www-proxy net-www/squidguard Y cyfred
www-proxy net-www/squirm Y cyfred
The only thing that seems odd is adzapper I dont think the www-proxy
description fully caters for it. However www-proxy most likely is the best
place for it to go (only other alternative IMO is www-misc which is no better
suited anyway).
Other than that thumbs up here...

www-apps net-www/bookmarksync Y webapps
I maintain this ebuild now, and would thus suggest the following:
www-misc net-www/bookmarksync N jmglov
bookmarksync is a command-line utility, hence the category change. I added a
metadata.xml when I picked the package up yesterday. :)
www-apps net-www/lxr N webapps
I am fine with this, but please assign it to me:
www-apps net-www/lxr N jmglov
Other than that, I am happy with your list.
Cheers,
Josh

If mod_mono is being moved to dev-dotnet/, shouldn't mod_gzip be moved to
app-arch/, and mod_mp3 be moved to media-libs/. ?
Also, netscape-flash, according to portage, is a media player, not a web
client. (and shouldn't plugins goto x11-plugins anyways? that should be
broken up also)
One last thing, vim is not in app-vim/, and emacs isn't in app-emacs/
(there both in app-editor/) and there is probably other exampes, but I
think it might be more following policy to have www-apache/apache in
www-webservers/apache, and leave www-apache/ for the misc. stuff.
Other then those things. looks good, much better then we got now

That is a better alternative, as Joe said (may I call you Joe?). If you
notice, python and perl are in dev-lang, their modules in
dev-p{erl,ython}; aspell and ispell are in app-text, the dictionaries in
app-spell or wherever. So this would make sense to me as well.

memcached is currently in net-www/memcached. I'm thinking this would be
better suited to net-misc since it really is generic and doesn't have to
be used with web programming.

And .NET stuff is in dev-dotnet, php in dev-php, to provide counter-examples.
Chuck wants to leave apache in www-apache, and that's fine by me.

Am I just blind or is net-www/snownews missing? It's metadata.xml states
it belongs to "no-herd", and the ebuild I submitted for the newest
version hasn't made it to the tree yet.
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53016
I believe it should go to www-client/snownews, as it seems the other RSS
apps (liferea, raggle, rawdog, straw etc.) are moved there.
Please, before you drop it, I would volunteer to maintain that package,
as I've offered you in my mail a while ago. :-)

Michael

It's an interesting idea, and one I hadn't considered.
Tbh, I'd rather keep all the miscellaneous apache stuff together.
I'm looking to move mod_mono to dev-dotnet because it is maintained by the
mono people, just like mod_php is looked after by the php people, and
mod_python is looked after by the python people.

I like that idea better than creating a www-plugins category ... except that
x11-plugins is just another dumping ground right now. Hrm. I'll sleep on
it, and see if anyone else chips in in the mean time.
Oh for nested category support ;-)

Sure. Please make an ebuild for it, and get it put into Portage ;-)

I'll take a look at that bug tonight, and then I'll talk to you offlist.
Just in case anyone's worried, I'm not proposing to drop any packages as part
of this move. We do have a problem with abandoned packages, but I plan to
deal with that post-move through a combination of recruitment and stricter
monitoring on the www-* categories.

very well organized. Looking through the list, i came over a few
unmaintained packages that i could follow :)
Could we think of a www-appserver group (or whatever alike) to contain all
application servers now under dev-* or net-www?
These are some i know about, but surely there are more in the list,
or to come in future ;): at least other 5 of them are not in gentoo
at now, but are widely used, so...

net-www/jboss
net-www/jetty
net-www/orion
net-www/resin
net-www/resin-ee

It's worth a thought.
Personally, I perfer the idea that anything that's language-specific (the
language itself, supporting frameworks, and runtime environments like
appservers) should go into the dev-<lang> category.
But I'm open to bribes ^H^H^H debate ;-)

jboss, orion, resin, tomcat are servers and should go to www-server, not
dev-java. They are webservers. The fact that they are java-based is
just a dependency on java.
Also I think we might need some clarification on where RSS/RDF news
aggregators should be placed (if it has not been done so already).

Tomcat and JBoss for two are just runtime environments for Java applications.
I think it's reasonable for these to go into dev-java.

They're in www-clients for now.
