Hi all,

A person named shadows joined #gentoo-portage looking for help regarding
ebuild creation - not the first. Anyway, (s)he suggested that there be a
channel dedicated to ebuild discussion but allowing anybody to speak - ie.
#gentoo-dev for users. I think its a great idea. Any seconders on this? If
so, would the IRC people set up the channel with the proper permissions and
stuff?

Regards,
Jason Stubbs

I don't know if this was meant to be for me only, so I'm sending it out again.

Yeah. I meant that the point of the new channel would be for development
discussion rather than user support. I didn't mean that #gentoo-dev should be
opened up to users or that #gentoo-portage's purpose should be changed.
Perhaps #gentoo was such a channel in the past, but that was the past.

Thinking about it, such a channel would probably help recruitment somewhat
too. I became a developer after another was kind enough to say "learn this,
this and this". It was only a stroke of luck/fate/whatever that allowed the
initial contact. #gentoo to #gentoo-dev is worlds apart. #gentoo-ebuilding
(or whatever) would be a good bridge between them for those that want to
traverse it.

Jason Stubbs

Don't we already have that with #gentoo-bugs (ok, the name is not
exactly describing in that case) ?

In the beginning, there was nothing. And God said, 'Let there be
Light.' And there was still nothing, but you could see a bit better.

I think you are right. #gentoo-bugs would be perfect for this. However, I
don't find it in the list below, which is taken from www.g.o.

#gentoo General Discussion
#gentoo-dev Development Only Discussion
#gentoo-user Low-bandwidth chat
#gentoo-server Server related chat
#gentoo-laptop Laptop related chat
#gentoo-embedded Embedded Gentoo Linux
#gentoo-hardened Hardened Gentoo Linux
#gentoo-java Java related chat
#gentoo-games Game Discussions/Support
#gentoo-cluster Gentoo Linux/Clustering

When i first came to IRC, I joined #gentoo. I had a look at #gentoo-user, but
it's not in use. It may as well be dropped as "low-bandwidth" is too generous
a description. I did sit in #gentoo-bugs for a little while (don't know how I
found out about it) but it seemed to be just a place for people to listen out
for bug-wranglers.

Anyway.. if #gentoo-bugs was used as a user development channel, it would give
the initiative-endowed users a chance to see the bulk of a
distribution's/developer's workload. Perhaps #gentoo-bugs should just be
added to the above list. Any other people support this?

jBridging #gentoo and #gentoo-dev is one of the things I would really
like #gentoo-bugs to do. I don't necessarily think this is happening
right now but I'm pointing users to -bugs whenever I get the chance - of
cause at the moment BugDays are the primary factor driving this.

Ahh, but that's only 12 times a year. Realisticly, we need much more that
that. Thanks for the effort, but nothing else to say...
