They can have the same name for portage, but this should be avoided as
it is not transparent for users if they type "emerge firebird" which one
will be chosen.

How about the java and java-pkg eclasses?
The renaming of ebuilds is possible but requires manual work and still
creates some problems, so I recommend against it unless it's necessary.
The -src suffix for package names to select cource code installs would
require a major change to the package-name parsing code.

Personally I don't see any benefit from your proposal other that it will
require a lot of work, confuse users and create a lot of other problems
not thought of yet.
