How could it get messy? In theory, after src_unpack, /var/tmp/portage/*/work
should be a source tree for the package.

If it were part of the package name, why aren't the database firebird and the
browser firebird allowed to have the same name?

Referring to my system running Linux for a kernel and using mostly GNU tools
for everything else (C library; ls,cp,mv,sed)

Just because I think it is possible to do doesn't mean I know how to do it ;)
For example, I know it's possible to make a Java ebuild, but I don't know
where to start for that.
