I believe I had a problem similar to this a while ago. Turned out there was an
undocumented env variable that needed to be set before genkernel was run...
Not sure if the same issue still exists tho.

But many users want to be able to simply change hardware and have it work
automaticly. Sure, you could probably preset your configuration and gain a
bit of speed, but then you could need to change something if you want to
change your hardware. Either way, there's a sacrifice. That's why there's an
option. :)
