Hi there,

the mplayer guys seem to have the bad habit of distributing and updating
files while keeping the same name - so, as you can see in bug 29972, we
have files in distfiles which differ from the versions you find when you
follow the SRC_URI.

I'd like to switch to some kind of snapshots (like
win32codecs-20030930.tar.bz2) manually uploaded to distfiles.

Since I never touched this ebuild before I'd like to know if this is
ok for you and I'd like to hear suggestions for naming the ebuilds.

I'd prefer just calling them win32codecs-20030930.ebuild (changing suffix
from snapshot to snapshot) since I can't see in which way these codecs are
related to mplayer versions (what I think is where the current versioning
scheme started).

Comments?

Bye, Patrick

Sounds good to me. I do this with a couple of game ebuilds where
the upstream situation is similar. I usually put a comment in the
ebuild with a commented out copy of SRC_URI that points to the "old"
source location.

Two things: first, it becomes even more important to upload to dev.g.o
before committing the ebuild to portage since people will then be depending
on the Gentoo mirrors for the source. Second, be sure to email the
upstream folks about the situation and ask them if they wouldn't mind
versioning their releases. I've found that sometimes it just hasn't
occurred to them and once they realize why it's helpful they switch to
a versioning scheme.

Later,

I also add some digest errors yesterday with the arial fonts packages
for mplayer. I guess it's the same "no versioning" issue, no?

Looks like. What's the bug number for your problem?

Oops, sorry, I've forgot to say that. In fact I've not opened one
myself, it was already done at 29987.
