I view make.conf as performing the same functionality as config.site only in a different capacity. config.site is used by configure scripts generated by autoconf to provide site wide "default values for some configuration values" (info autoconf --> node "Setting Site Defaults") which are overridden by the environment. -- gentoo-dev@gentoo.org mailing list
