Hello,
  I'm looking for some advice to make a Gentoo installation thats
completely UTF-8 compliant.  This is a developer  issue, as I'm also
looking for what regards will be required from our side to make UTF-8
the default for applications and userspace tools, as well as how to make
it work nicely in the console.

So far I think RedHat is the one distribution thats "ahead" in this
case, (I haven't had the chance to try SuSe) but they fail too (gtk+-1.2
for example will make fun things happen when it hits öæøØÆÅÄÖåä )

So, a roadmap of sorts, perhaps documentation and a list of "broken
apps" in regards to this would be a nice start, and then providing
buildfixes and patches to make things work as supposed....


yep, this goal is pretty big and will be a long time thing that should
probably be covered by USE="utf8"  or other flag, but in this case I'm
looking for input from developers and users who have ideas on how to
make this happen and make it a smooth transition.

I don't think a USE flag would help in this case.  utf-8 is
mostly a configuration issue on a lot of dot-files.  Or do
you want to extend ebuilds with utf8-use-switches that will
install different config-files?

Maybe a fresh-install could be done with using utf-8, but I
think an upgrade would be even harder.  A lot of users set
their LOCALEs in their dot-files and they would dislike when
portage changes something in it.

But as I'm also a friend of utf-8, I suggest we should start
with a kind of dev-guide about what has to be changed, so
that the console and the various terminal-apps are able to
print proper utf-8.  Then we can walk through the terminal-
and X-apps and test their utf-8-compliance.  With all the
collected knowledge we can create default configuration
files and an extended "switching to utf-8" guide.

The first step is to fix the glibc ebuilds to install utf8 locales
w/o requiring manual intervention after every upgrade.

There are some apps that just don't work in utf8 -- acroread of
course has the standard kludge in its script, one of the chinese
dictionaries only displays useful fonts if it is invoked in a zh
locale, etc -- so getting a list of them would be a good starting
point.  

There are also some subtle issues with some apps.  Scribus has an
interesting bug where, when running in a (some?) utf8 locale(s)
one part of the code will deal correctly with utf8, but another
treats U+0080..U+00FF as single-octet latin1.  Issues like that
could exist in other apps.

The above said, I do almost everything these days in utf8 and see
very few issues.

That would be a good start.

It would be great if some of the ideas could be put down in the bug
below. I was hoping to work on it in the last month or so, but I've been
hopelessly out of time recently. But UTF-8 support under Gentoo is
definitely desirable.

When I made my utf8 locale I used a command like

localedef -c -f UTF-8 -i en_AU en_AU.UTF-8

taken from the forums thread:

Instructions in other places agree with this thread.

But when I list the locales using locale -a it lists as
en_AU.utf8

When I set LANG=en_AU.utf8 Fluxbox stopped working. When I changed it to 
LANG=en_AU.UTF-8 fluxbox and other things were ok. My understanding is 
that UTF-8 is the correct name for the encoding. In that case why does 
locale -a change it to lowercase and remove the hyphen? This is bound to 
cause more people than just me to be confused.
