Hi,
I would like to hear your opinions about a new global
USE-flag for DVD-writing, called dvdr.
We just ran into the problem, that we have USE-flags for cdr
and dvd, but both won't fit DVD-writing. The dvd-USE-flag
is mostly for DVD-readonly-usage. So, if we use the
dvd-USE-flag together with cdrtools or xcdroast, a huge
number of users would install to much software and only a
small number of users could benefit from them.
For the moment we have two packages that would make use of
a dvdr-USE-flag:
- cdrtools
- xcdroast
Maybe there are more applications I don't know of, but
mostly they are directly based on the cdrtools.
At the moment there is a fork of the cdrtools in portage,
called cdrtools-dvdr. This package would become deprecated
with a dvdr-USE-flag as it is the same like the cdrtools,
but with a special patch for DVD-writing. This could be
better handled by a USE-flag.
Regards, Lars

Makes sense to me, especially since these dvd writers are starting to
get so affordable (read: the new plextor is $259 @ newegg)

considering cdr is only used in 3 programs i really think it should be a local
use flag ... same for your dvdr use flag ...

It shouldn't matter how many ebuilds implement the USE flags, but the scope
they can affect. cdr, dvd, and dvdr all deal with hardware support, so it
only makes sense for them to be global...
There should probably be a dvdram USE flag also, but I don't know if
*anything* would implement it, so maybe not.

You're right. Maybe we should notice it in the
USE-flag-policy.

Ehm, DVD-RAMs are accessed like a SCSI-device (at least the
5 year old model I own). So there is no need for further
application-based dvdram extensions.

Right. That's why nothing would implement it. =p
