Kurt Lieber may have firm numbers... I seem to recall it being somewhere 
around 100k based on rsync server statistics, but my memory's a little vague.

I don't know how accurate rsync stats will be in telling you.  I know at
my workplace I have one server that rsyncs to the outside and 10 or so
machines on the inside that mount /usr/portage from there.  But rsync
server would only see one machine instead of 11.

We know that is the case, but at least we can make a much better
estimization than others can. I'm sure there are also people using gentoo
that don't rsync often (once a month), but again some data is better then
nothing.

total users based on that?

Heh is this one of those, add gentoo-stats to the base system tricks?
*g*... J/K in all honesty, I think people would freak. 

But if gentoo-stats was made more automatic for the keygen and crontab
setup it might be easier to get people to adopt using it. I've noticed
that some people just don't like typing in extra commands while
installing things =(
