Dear all,
I've spent a bit of time recently thinking about our website and some
of the current problems with it. I don't have any problems with our
look-and-feel, as I think that part of the site was designed very well,
but I do think there are both navigation and maintainance issues that
have arisen in the two years since the current site was designed. I'm
listing some problems that I see with the site, and I would greatly
appreciate it if people would add to this list.

1. Right now it is essentially impossible to navigate to any of our
project pages (including all of the top-level projects such as
infrastructure, hardened, ...) from the gentoo main page. At the same
time, the main page is getting a bit crowded with links (especially the
left-hand navigation column).

2. The last time I looked, our xsl code was really ugly. Moreover,
there's a great deal of content that is buried in the xsl. (For
example, adding a new link to the left-hand navigation column requires
editing the xsl file).

3. Numerous people have complained that the html+css we generate is
remarkably ugly. I don't know if we can fix this problem without losing
support for older browsers (NS 4.x being the principle offender).

Best,
g2boojum

See below.

Doing kind of an include for the links would be nice and easy to
maintain, as in an .xml file parsed when creating the page, i think it
is reasonable. Maybe it would be nice as well to have those
<international>.gentoo.org links as well from the frontpage (see bug
23199) so we can eventually implement what i've been fighting for over
the last year and a half. Now that Gentoo 1.4 has been released, we can
concentrate on the look and feel.

That's a matter of reformatting the css with a couple more styles then
checking what browser people come up with, shouldn't be complicated to
deal with.

Personally I like the look of the *.xml pages on gentoo.org. It's a
unique look, makes things very obvious as to what they are, and is easy
to read.

My $0.02

I'm working on it.

Also trying to get in a smarter directory layout (for documentation and
projects) into it, too - but that's secondary.

Cleaning up the css and guide.xsl files does not need to mean that the look
needs to disappear. The only thing that is needed is a better structure, as
the current menu design was not built for the webpage size we have now.
