Hi All,
If people are willing to test an install on this (for AthlonXP) that
would be much appreciated.
http://dev.gentoo.org/~drobbins/livecd-athlon-xp-1.4-20030730-cd1.iso
Follow the normal instructions and unpack stage 3. Then:
unpack /mnt/cdrom/snapshots/portage-xyz.tar.bz2 to /mnt/gentoo/usr
copy /mnt/cdrom/distfiles/* to /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles/
(create dir)
copy /mnt/cdrom/packages/* (-a) to /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/packages/
then to install binaries, do a USE="bindist" emerge -K xfree
and particularly, genkernel needs testing:
USE="bindist" emerge -K genkernel
and then just emerge some kernel, and run genkernel
Thanks,

Just a quick question. Does the kernel on the CD support SMP? The
Athlon XP and Athlon MP are the same chip, instruction-wise.

You can type "smp" at the boot prompt to boot a SMP kernel. This CD
is a 1.4_final test.

Hi all,
I just want to notice there is an ebuild for an important driver required for
adsl modems based on an eagle chipset.
Adding this driver to the Gentoo LiveCd-1.4 would allow many users to connect
to internet, and perform the installation from sources:
http://fdupoux.free.fr/gentoo/eagle-driver-1.0.4.tar.gz
Hope it helps.
Thanks

Speaking of LiveCDs ...
I've recently aquired an "OldWorld" Mac (PowerPC 7500/100 with a G3 250
upgrade installed), and have upgraded the hard drive from a 700 to a 2
and 4GB, and would very much like to install Gentoo on the 4. However,
it appears that the CD doesn't initialize my SCSI controller, or SCSI
support and there don't appear to be any SCSI-related modules to load to
diagnose the problem.
Unfortunately I've only got 128MB of RAM, so there's not really enough
space to roll my own kernel, and I can't access any of my drives to
create any temp space (no ATA controllers are present), and since the
Gentoo 1.2 images appear to have been removed from all mirrors I find
myself at somewhat of a loss. :/
I'm currently exploring other options (SuSE, Tom's Rootboot, Knoppix,
etc.) but would rather see Gentoo improved than rely on third party
support. If there's anything I can do to help, any input I can provide,
or anything I can test, please don't hesitate to drop me a line at
blkdeath@g.o!
Thanks!

What about pulling the config from the disk and rolling one with the scsi as
modules? Popping the livecd onto a rewritable should allow for
substitution of the kernel and mods. Or even worse case, use one of your
other boxes to cross-compile a kernel if ya really had to?

I ran into the same issue with the hardware: G3 (B/W) 400mhz, Adaptec
2940 SCSI controller, Seagate Baracuda 10000rpm UW 18GB. The issue was
with the 1.4 "final" cd that was recently released. Again, with only
128M of ram and little time, I didn't want to try and build a kernel. I
found that the RC6 version of the ppc livecd *does* have all the popular
SCSI modules you'd expect. That said, the RC6 cd has a million other
"issues" that were cleared up by 1.4 final. If you're comfortable fixing
some files, it will get you going in the interim.
HTH.

The ppc kernel scsi stuff has been an enourmeous pita to me when building
the livecds. When some drivers are enabled, the kernel seems to hang on
non-scsi machines. The help information provided by make menuconfig also
most of the time doesn't mention what drivers work on ppc, and what
drivers don't.
I know my quest for the perfect kernel .config is not over yet. Expect a
lot of updated livecds with mostly updated kernels before I start
improving it feature-wise. Feel free to send me your .config or enlighten
me on what scsi stuff needs to be enabled on ppc.

Booting with "gentoo doscsi" didn't load the proper modules?

The gentoo ppc livecd does not use the same boot options as the x86 one.
The ppc 1.4_final livecd kernel .config against ppc-sources-2.4.21-r2 can
be found here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~pvdabeel/kernel/2.4.21-r2.conf
