I did an emerge -u --deep world -p and am told that winex -cvs and
glibc-2.3.2-r1 conflict with each other. I get
B app-emulation/winex-cvs (from pkg sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r1)
R sys-libs.glibc-2.3.2-r1
I remember some heavy discussion on glibc being upgraded (one says it breaks
x but another says x works fine, etc.) but from what I remember it was
decided to do it anyway.
How do I fix this? It appears I'm blocked. I didn't see anything on
bugzilla that would apply to this.
Thanks.

Hi Brett,
I was one making noise about winex not working with glibc-2.3.2. I
added this line to /etc/portage/package.mask:
>=sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r1
before upgrading. This kept glibc-2.3.2-r1 on my box so winex still
works for me.
Everything OK so far.

Nope, didn't work. If I do an emerge -u --deep system -p it wants to
downgrade/upgrade glibc-2.3.1-r4 from 2.3.2-r1. I'm still blocked.
I'm running glibc-2.3.2-r1.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I'll bug it too.
Looks like you were right!

if you're already using glibc-2.3.2 then winex hasnt been working for you ...
`emerge -C winex` and wait until they release a newer version that works with
glibc-2.3.2

i wouldnt suggest trying to downgrade ... i'm pretty sure it'll leave your box
usuable (well it'll leave glibc unusable and thats usually your whole box :D)
you can (if you dont mind shelling out $5) buy the binary versions from
transgaming ... those work with the newest glibc ...

Don't buy codeweavers wine stuff as it doesn't work with the latest version of
glibc. I'll be downgrading glibc soon. Built glibc with nptl support as
someone here said it would work that way but it doesn't here. There is also
a bug in the glibc ebuild when you enable nptl, which I must report.

Downgrading glibc is a bad idea... anything built against the newer
glibc version will break...

Hmmm I'm running gcc 3.2.3 and glibc 2.3.2 and codeweavers crossover plugin
works fine for me.. of course I had to tweak ~/.crossover/config to contain
my latest kernel (2.4.22) in LDAssumeKernel, but after that everything worked
flawlessly

Actually I was talking crossover office not plugin, haven't tried that. Guess
I should have been more specific.

Yeah, been there done that :) In this case there are only a couple of things
built against the latest glibc and they can fail at this stage.

In my experience, /etc/portage/package.mask is ignored, unlike
/etc/portage/package.unmask.
The OP is probably having the same problem.
(I had just guessed, when .unmask was added, that .mask
would also work. But my experimentation proved otherwise.)
So why does it *work* for you? :)

It does work. When it was first introduced it was
/etc/portage/profiles/package.mask for some reason. Now it's
/etc/portage/package.mask.
Perhaps yours is still in the old location? Otherwise I can't see why
it works for me and not for you. I don't think there's anything
special about my box.

Location of this file depends on portage version.
# grep "pkgmasklines+=" /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py
pkgmasklines+=grabfile("/etc/portage/package.mask")
(This is for portage-2.0.49_pre12, but it used to be
"/etc/portage/profiles/package.mask".)

I had never tried /etc/portage/profiles. Never occured to me.
So perhaps it works now for me...
(testing...)
Ah, yes. It does work now.
Cool.
