Hi,
On the 21th of July the Gentoo Documentation Project will start using a new
documentation policy. This policy has been discussed and accepted on
gentoo-doc@gentoo.org, the main discussion mailinglist for
documentation-related items.
You can find the draft at http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/doc-policy.html and
will come online on the 21th of July on
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/doc-policy.xml (which currently is the "old"
policy).
This policy has a couple of important changes, the most important probably
being the mandatory use of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike
license, something several of our users requested.
We will convert our current documentation to CC-AS but we first need to find
out if we just need approval of the Gentoo managers, or the approval of every
author/contributor.
Just letting you guys know,
Sven Vermeulen

Why that license instead of the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike
license?

As I understand it, the copyright for our documentation (as well as any
written document) is held by the author unless they specifically assign it
to Gentoo Linux. So, we will likely need to get the approval of every
author, at least, though perhaps not every contributor.

Why would we make our documents available only for non-commercial purposes?
Is Gentoo willing on taking a lawyer when a company uses our documents for
commercial purposes?
As long as Attribution and ShareAlike are available, the company can't close
the document, meaning more input for the GDP :)
Tx for the input concerning document ownership... I guess I'll contact all
the authors then :)
