I'm running dep-clean through my system to try and find outdated
packages (somehow, I lost my world file, so I have to catch all the
installed packages by hand and re-insert them).
One of the curious packages that are installed is
sys-devel/ld.so-1.9.11-r2. Not in my portage tree anymore (I've
checked this over a few weeks now, with frequent rsyncs inbetween from
different mirrors), I went to cvs.gentoo.org to try and find out what
happened to it. On the viewcvs interface, it appears that the ebuilds
are still in place (ie, not in the Attic), but they're nowhere to be
seen in the "real-life" portage tree.
Can someone enlighten me please? :)

Something seems to be wrong with the rsync mirror.

With one specific mirror? I doubt that -- as I said, I've been
checking this over a few weeks' time, while keeping up to date. I
just checked on three different machines: two, which use regular
"emerge sync", both miss the entry, while a third, which uses
"emerge-webrsync", has got it.

Yes, with ONE, SPECIFIC mirror - THE mirror. Nothing is wrong with the other
mirrors - they all rsync with THE mirror ;)

We're using an option to rsync that excludes a few files including *.so
files (to avoid mirroring shared libraries). There was an open bug about
this, but I believe it was determined that nothing in the tree depends
on ld.so.
You shouldn't need ld.so installed. It's deprecated.

Catching my hand? Why not run 'regenworld'?

I did run it a long time ago, when portage went through its
zap-the-worldfile phase, and assumed it just didn't work completely.
Never followed it up. I ran it now, and imported another whole lot of
stuff. Thanks for the pointer!

I believe you need ld.so to run a.out binaries, and
ld-linux.so.1 for libc5 binaries. I think Ive still got some
a.out guys, and a libc5 too... Probably not too common for the
average Gentoo user who doesnt remember the conversion to ELF,
and libc6:) Someone might need it for a some legacy stuff,
though.
