Hello,

I wrote to Seemant, but he didn't reply and I see more and more people having
issues with this change:

	08 Apr 2003; Seemant Kulleen <seemant@gentoo.org> xfree-4.3.0-r2.ebuild,
	  xfree-4.3.0.ebuild, xfree-4.3.0.ebuild:
many fixes in this ebuild -- using the old keymaps from 4.2 to sort out the
	  keymap situation.

My question is: what keymap situation? AFAIK, 4.3.0 keymaps are OK, Why
downgrade the whole keymaps to 4.2? An explanation from devs (specially
Seemant) would be very welcome.

Many thanks in advance,
Norberto

I still lack ~ and a few other 'dead' or otherwise interesting keys
in my terminal emulators. xev shows the right stuff for
XLookupString, but the glyph (?) just doesn't show up in the
terminal. it's rather annoying, but I just haven't bothered finding
the culprit and fixing it yet.

If your interested my solution was to set the env-variable LANG to
"en_US.ISO8859-1". E.g. export LANG="en_US.ISO8859-1" if you're using
bash.

thanks. interesting fix though. hm, now to figure out the proper
placement of this, somewhere in /etc/env.d I take it. it needs to
be set before starting the terminal, so setting it in my own
setupfiles doesn't quite seem to do it. :-/

I set mine in /etc/profile and it seems to work for me (I use Eterm
which reads it at every new invocation) and it should work if you just
log out and log in again.

That doesn't answer my question. The fact that one won't set LANG in -r1 means
-r2 is broken. So please, if any dev know why Seemant downgraded keymaps, I'd
like to know.

Thanks,

A better place (more into Gentoo-style) is /etc/env.d/02locale (if it isn't
created yet, create it) with the requested content; mine sais

	swift@Dimosys swift $ cat /etc/env.d/02locale
	LC_CTYPE="nl_BE@euro"

since I only want my charactertype to change, but keep the language on
English...

On 4/23/2003 Seemant said (subject "To the unhappy folks") he was "on the
verge of a 2 week hiatus", so he's quite possibly still on it. He'll probably
speak up in a few days. That's probably also why he didn't respond to your
email.

One of the goals of the ebuild maintainership reorganization apparently in
progress, incidentally, was to eliminate the developer-on-vacation problem;
so hopefully this kind of thing won't happen in the future....

We had someone else working on xfree. He abruptly left without
explanation... very weird.

Oh thank you!! I miss that e-mail somehow. I've read it now.

Best regards,
