Speaking of gentoo init stuff, I noticed that several apps (pure-ftpd, swat
and cvspserver) are by default installed for xinet startup (so I ended up
emerging xinet too, rather than bothering).

Any reason these are configured that way?  Just curious.

Concerning pure-ftpd (for example), you can make it started by xinetd,
as the /etc/xinetd.d/pure-ftpd file is provided (just change the line "disable="yes"),
but you can also launch it using the /etc/init.d/pureftpd script like others services.

just choose !
