If you read my first email in this thread, you'll see that I don't think this is a valid solution. The reason is that it means that vim will be built differently purely depending on the environment. Part of the point of USE and DEPEND is that we get a deterministic build. I think the solution of the local USE flag, despite its drawbacks, is better than depending on the installed environment.
