As mentioned in bug #12044, I would like to propose an 'exif' USE flag.
Packages that have exif support:
php/mod_php (currently enabled always), gthumb, gphoto2.
possibly media-gfx/exiftags
and an upcoming ebuild i'm working on for exif support (jhead)
line for use.desc:
exif - Adds support for handling EXIF data
See bug #12044 for more information.

question, exif, is that the extended jpeg format, or am I on the wrong
track here?

i believe it is used to store extra info (text i think) in images, digital
cameras seem to use.
on a seperate note, i added a gpdf ebuild into bugzilla just for you :)

EXIF is a data chunk embedded inside a JPEG or TIFF. It is used by nearly every
digital camera manufacter out there presently.
The data is usually a whole lot of parameters from the camera
(fstop/focallength/exposurelength etc.) Also there is a thumbnail
created by most cameras embedded inside the file (your camera uses this
for the thumbnail directly), and there are a few applications that use
it for the thumbnail as well (Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro on windows, not
certain about linux).
I'm told that WindowsXP has native support for reading EXIF data inside
explorer, and shows the information in the status bar.
Here are some example images of mine, with a small subset of the available
info displayed below them.

Inside PHP, it's a massive 140kb single C file.
The shared extension version bloats PHP by ~200kb. I don't have any good
stats for the non-shared version.
Small things, up to 25kb or so of binary I don't mind, but big things
like this aren't it.

How about adding amention of the fact that exif is an extension to jpeg
in the desc. The line given is fairly redundant if you know what exif
is, and quite pointless if you don't.

We cannot then maybe just include support for this if 'jpeg' in USE ?
I do not want to sound like shooting the 'exif' USE flag down, but it
would be nice in general if we could keep the number down if possible
