Hi,
currently, i think, portage merges all apps to /usr. whouldn't it be
possible to customize the prefix ? e.g. in large networks where /usr is
mounted through the network emerge whould need to emerge to /usr/local
to install a program locally. something like PORTAGE_PREFIX="/usr/local"
emerge foo would be nice. Perhaps PORTAGE_PREFIX="/usr" emerge kde would
get rid of /usr/kde :-) Ebuilds whould have to be changed, but this
should be possible after a new version for every ebuild is out.

Currently /opt and /usr/local are two candidates for files. A prefix would then enable these to be used. I have often wondered why gnome and kde do not go in /opt. You could then reinstall without overwriting these.
I use /usr/local for manually installed stuff and some scripts I have.

One problem is that for some parts, especially libraries, other ebuilds expect
them to be installed at a certain place. When they are not, compilation can
fail.

There's been a lot of careful thought put into the current placement of gnome
and kde; placing them in /opt was considered, but rejected. Gentoo doesn't
violate the LSB lightly, it's done for very specific and powerful reasons.
Search the Gentoo website, forums, and mailing list archives for "LSB" and
you'll get the reasoning, as well as the flame war that periodically
surrounds it.
