On the Nvidia web site, they have a source RPM (but no tar) for the GLX
driver. I don't know what all is contained in it, but would it be
possible to make an ebuild to extract the source from the rpm, compile
it (optimized), and install it? If it were possible, I think it would be
better than using the binary version. I would think that this would make
prelinking possible if it were compiled right, and you could probably
get performance gains by compiling it with your customized CFLAGS.

So, how about it? Has anybody looked at the source RPM from Nvidia? Has
anybody tried compiling it? Can this be added to portage? Will I ever be
able to play tuxracer again?

nvidia doesn't provide any kind of sources except some files to glue his
kernel-driver into the kernel. that's all unfortunately :-(((((

i checked the src.rpm, it's the same as the tar.gz

That src.rpm just contains a tar.gz that contains the same binary driver
everybody is already using. As far as being able to play tuxracer
again, you should be able to already.

The comment about Tux Racer wasn't really related to this, but it hasn't
worked since I installed the latest (1.0.4191) drivers. The same thing
happened when I put the latest drivers on my friend's computer (a fresh
RedHat 8.0 install).

Anyway, that's unkind of them to call it a source rpm if there's no
source. Don't tease me like that!

Oh, well, I still like Nvidia :-p

So guys you are asking why it is called a source rpm ? Well it isn't a
binary package also, so they call it a source.

Don't complain about missing sources. Nvidia just want to earn some
money by hiding some edges of their technology. Don't blame me for it,
neither blame them. They do their work good, don't they ?

Anyway it actually is source. There where some bugs in a GLX source
module long time ago. I could fix that by editing the glx header where
you can enable and disable GL options when somethings don't work.

Just track the problem down or install the older version. Isn't the
41XX stuff a development version ?

BYE INGO

41xx is stable. Their leaked drivers (windows) are in the 42 and I
*think* 43 range already.
