I haven't been unable to "emerge rsync" in about a week. I get the
following error message, no matter which mirror I'm getting thrown at:
receiving file list ...
34834 files to consider
kde-base/kdelibs/files/
kde-base/kdelibs/files/kdelibs-2.2.2a-gentoo.diff
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (839195 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(165)
This is happening on two different computers (i.e. it's unlikely to be
a networking problem). Would anyone have any ideas?

I have seen that several times when /usr gets too full.
Just my .02

Nope, this is not the case here:
agenkin@bashful:~$ df -hl
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda7 3.7G 2.9G 617M 83% /
tmpfs 2.0M 28K 2.0M 2% /mnt/.init.d
/dev/hda5 228M 67M 150M 31% /var
/dev/hda6 183M 8.7M 165M 5% /tmp
/dev/hda8 5.6G 521M 4.8G 10% /data
/dev/hda9 26G 14G 12G 54% /data2
/data2/tmp/portage 26G 14G 12G 54% /var/tmp/portage
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 674M 674M 0 100% /mnt/lg
On my system /usr/portage is a symlink to /data/portage.rsync, and
/data/has almost 5G of disk space.
