Hi,
What is the most elegant way to use a custom profile in portage?
Emerge rsync will delete it if I place it under /usr/portage right? If I
change the symbolic link in /etc/make.profile to point to another directory,
would it cause eventual problems? Would updates to baselayout and such
replace /etc/make.profile back to /usr/portage/profiles?
I need to create a new profile for running gentoo in a virtual server
environment, i.e. inside a host system. See the vserver project.
thanks,
Cedric

Once you get past rsync blasting your updates to a profile (using one of
the methods you suggested), there is a problem with customized updates.
The problem is that no notification is made when changes are made to
the profiles. For instance, recently, I started getting errors from
portage that no unmasked gcc existed in portage. It turns out that the
version specified explicitly (*=...) in my packages file had been
removed from portage. A simple e-mail anytime profiles are touched
would really be helpful.

i would make /usr/local/profiles and place them there. You will need to maintain
your profiles, eg make sure they are up-to-date. Then use PORTAGE_OVERLAY=" \
/usr/portage/profiles" Updates to baselayout will not hose your /etc/make.profile
as the baselayout ebuild doesn't know which arch/release you want to use.
