Congratulations to carpaski for his patch to newbin about 11 hours ago.
Unfortunately for me it came too late. I had a slightly older version of
gentoo portage. And I decide to have a look at it. An made the classic
mistake of running konqueror as root. And then due to sleep deprivation I
clicked on instead of right clicking on newbin. Effectively rm -rf / as root.
I'm still kicking myself.

Cheers,
Jonathan Hunt

It happens at least once to any UNIX guy!
wellcome to the club! :)

(although I only "got" rm -rf /usr ..and it was typed.. also sleep
deprivation and the wrong "tab" at the wrong time.)

Something similar happened to me too. Now i know there is a big
difference between fsck and mkfs!!

I just finished installing my Gentoo 1.2 system and wanted to do a
backup. I was going to do a filesystem check before backuping. However,
i made a mistake and typed mkfs... wouff... whole system gone! :(

Indeed... Happened to me too once. Heck, and they told me there would be
no hazing! ;-)

Try "rm -rf *" while being in /etc, which happened to me once. Very
interesting experience while my computer told me "Who are you? Go away"
every time ;P

Cheers,
Emiel

This happened to me after migrating my /home (safely backed up .. yeah)
to another system where the UID were a bit different...
ok, chmod spider -R * ... Got them.. but not my .ssh and other "vital"
dirs... so.. chmod spider -R .*
 *chunka chunka chunka chunka*

I was doing "restore" work for a long time once I found out what files I
had chown'ed ... very fun. But, You learn from it.. I doubt I'll ever
do that again ;)

That exact mistake bit me on a old Sun OS 4.x box a few years ago ... cost me
a weekend to recover that system (it was a production box ... visions of my
young career, all of 3 weeks old, dying a quick death danced through my
aching head).

It is definitely a right of passage ... :-)

I *think* the GNU file utilities have fixed that behavior (though I'd try it
in a sandbox to make sure), so that 'rm .*' does not try to delete . or ..
anymore, but of course if you get used to that, then transition to a non-GNU
UNIX syste ...

Jean.
