Thanks.  No, that didn't work.  It was looking for 
/usr/bin/i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++, which had disappeared while I had been 
experimenting with bug #9016.  After I unmerged gcc-2.95 and emerged 
gcc-3.2 it was OK.  Sorry for the false alarm.
