howdy...i was just reading through the FAQ and noticed the following:
===========================
How do i add a normal user?
Everyone seems to think that i shouldn't be using root for everyday use, how
can i add another user?
The command adduser gentoo will add a user called gentoo. The next step is to
give this user a password and passwd will do exactly that.
===========================
if i'm root, and i type these commands as you have outlined them here, i will
change the root password only, unless gentoo has modified adduser to su to
the added user by default...
granted, your website does explain that gentoo is mostly for power users, but
i think it wise to be a little more specific if you're going to address
passwd and adduser at all. =)
gentoo looks very cool, BTW! can't wait to mess with it.

The man page for passwd describes this, but basically:
$ passwd
Changes the password for whatever user you are.
$ passwd username
Changes the password for "username".
