hi,

I was wondering if there was a way to mask off portage directories
that you aren't using. Since i'm running a server, i have no need for
the various gnome, kde ebuilds, and since my server is an old laptop,
I would like as much disk space as possible. I know that you can
specify excluded files and directories to rsync, but is there a way to
pass this file to portage? Is this handled by package.mask?

Even if you mask out the directories... emerge will still update and
download the ebuilds when you rsync. Masked doesn't mean it's removed.
It just means it's hidden from production level systems. People can
still install these programs and use them.

The basic portage directory is ~200M in my case (after cleaning) - not a
lot if you are building gentoo on the machine. You will get more space
by cleaning out the contents of /usr/portage/distfiles (1.4G! at the
moment) and /var/tmp/portage (builds are left there).

Mine is 235M and yes that is quite a lot if you're not living on a 60G drive
but a 3.2G drive like my router.

Well if you let that grow to 1.4G thats your problem you can clean that after
each emerge if you know you won't need the sources anymore.

Not true. All thats left there are some logs.

So, since it doesn't seem to be possible to prune the portage tree,
would there be any problems with sharing the directory with annother
machine using NFS or something similar?

Only speed considerations are relevant. Those considerations have allready
been relieved by the caching that is employed by the system.
