I just tried to emerge gnumeric and got the message
"couldn't download linc-0.5.2.tar.bz2".  I can install
gnumeric by hand if necessary.  

In spite of a few glitches like this, I really like
Gentoo compared to Slackware which I was using for the
last 5 years.

try updating the portage version to one beyond 1.9.12 (I think), the
reason is the move to use mirror:// for downloads instead of harcoding
the ftp addressess  (that would change.. *shudder*)
