Some questions remain:

[1] Is it "safe" to set mmx, sse and march options (here: athlon-xp)?

[2] Is it safe to compile a kernel with those settings?

I'd try a complete system-recompile if those work ...

I've built a 2.4.19 kernel with 3.2pre with -march=athlon-mp and had no
problems at all.
