okay, I've done some testing on freetype 2.1.2
On my x86 system, this build works with pango 1.0.3 and gtk+ 2.0.5
Could other arches please test?
Tests were:
unmask freetype
emerge freetype
emerge -c freetype (no old .so's)
run gedit : worked
emerge pango : worked
emerge gtk+ : worked
thats about it ... more testing is required.

I also tested this freetype lib, and yes, it worked well. But,... for me, my
fonts in mozilla where butt ugly, so I quickly went back to the old version
that (with some setting changes) looks a lot better.

See if nautilus-1.0 works fine. It did not with freetype-2.1.0.

hacking some on the naut 1.0.x build to see if I can get it to work (at
least build) in Gnome 2.
though Im not that clear in the head atm..

Some dep changes, and I had to hack fam .la file as it associated with
/usr/lib/libstdc++.la, something that doesn't exist in my system (I have
to reemerge fam and see if it still borks)
but nautilus 1.0.x works okay here

I've tested with Mozilla
unmask freetype
emerge freetype
emerge -c freetype
emerge pango
emerge gtk+
restart mozilla
Seems to work OK, but fonts look worse than before. Is this to do
with hinting?
edited ebuild, adding src_unpack() section from 2.0.9 ebuild
emerge freetype
restart mozilla
Also fiddled with my subpixel decimation settings, looks better now.
start gimp (1.3)
Seems to work OK. Can use the type tool without problems.
start gnumeric (1.1.5)
Seems to work OK. This only really tests the widgets though, since
the gnumeric canvas dosn't use antialiasing.
start mrproject
Crashes. Find out that I'm running an older version, so...
emerge -c dev-libs/libmrproject
emerge -c app-office/mrproject
Seems to work OK.
Log out and log back in again.
Seems OK. This should test the panel and WM (metacity). They both
seem OK, although I'm not sure which FT they are using since the
xfree build includes it's own version.
Actually, the font rendering with FT212 looks better to my eyes that
that of FT209. And the apps I've tried seem to work without trouble.
I think that's all the major apps I have that use FT.
Yours,
Ian.
