this has been discussed before and danarmak even had kde3 cvs ebuilds
before kde3 was actually released. the word back then was, that this
would at some time become part of the official portage...
i don't know what the current status is, but i know that it is difficult
decision, because of the support questions that arise (which version do
you have installed?)
so, as of now, it doesn't work - but you might want to look at
danarmak's page for examples of how he did it... (using fancy eclasses
:)

due to the reasons stated above, cvs ebuilds are very unlikely added to
official portage though...
