Hello,

how can i make Portage display full paths to ebuilds when i do "emerge --pretend --update world"...?
for example, now i am geting:

 "[ebuild U ] x11-libs/qt-3.0.4-r1 to /"

and would realy like to know how to get something like:

"[ebuild U ] x11-libs/qt/qt-3.0.4-r1.ebuild to /"
or similar

Milos

Why would you need that? It is obvious from looking at it what the full
path is. If you need it for scripting, then I might suggest a hint:
emerge will take "=x11-libs/qt-3.0.4-r1" as an argument.

I am afraid that if the commands mentioned in the installation guide
puzzle you, then Gentoo Linux is not for you, because they are indeed
standart Linux commands. If you're interested in Linux, but are too
afraid of commands that seem to be cryptic and are not ready for doing
lots of things manually as well as reading enormous amounts of
documentation, I would suggest some other Linux distribution, like
RedHat, Mandrake or SUSE.

They are much easier to setup for a person who is not an avid Linux user
and they have rather good hardware autodetection during the install
process and most of them also supply GUI configuration utils that you
can use after installation. Gentoo Linux offers neither, nor does it aim
to. Think of it as a do-it-yourself-Linux-distribution. Many people like
the idea, many people don't.

Sincerely,
Dan Naumov (aka Jago on OPN)

Zdravo,

hello bojan,

one note: please do not write html mail to this mailinglist (or better: write
never html-mails to ALL mailinglists).

there are many books and howtos around the web. a very good book with all
commands is: o´reillys "linux in a nutshell". but you must know, that no book
can help more then simply doing it.

i have worked with suse linux long time but nothing in this distribution
worked like i want it - so i changed to gentoo linux. it's not so easy like
the configuation of suse but when you know what you're doing, it's the
easiest distribution ever seen.

!!! it is the first distribution where i can compile everything - without
errors !!!

right: you must read much more... but isn't it fun to learn more about linux?
i think thats the way of linux... ;-)

regards
hanez... ;-)

I'm writing a beginners manual for Gentoo, for my thesis...
Maybe you want a copy? (pdf, ps or kwd)

Lemme know!

See ya

Hello,

Will Gentoo ever sell the distribution like Red Hat,
Mandrake or SuSe? So that I can buy it in a box with
documentation etc, in a computershop.

Greetings Jeroen Verhoeckx

When can we expect a graphical install from Gentoo linux?
It's a great distro but it lacks a graphical installation.....

Yours truly

to recall the words of Eurven Hose:

this has been quite a topic in the forums, and most people are rather
glad, that there isn't any, and most hope there won't be ;)
