Excellent work! It works very well, I will use it a lot. I recommend everyone
to try it out. I also hope to see it in portage/app-admin soon : )

Hi,

I developed a graphical frontend for emerge called kportagemaster.
It is for kde.

The homepage of this project is:
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~mehnert/
There is also the ebuild and screenshots.

Just test it and if You find bugs, mail them.

Which KDE-style do you use? For me, some applications crash after exit if I
use the keramik style.

Yeah... it's good :]

¿Edition Mode?
¿Wizard to make ebuilds?
Then rocks! :]

No bugs found when playing with it :]

Hello. I've installed and tried your program and I like it very much. Looks and works great with the KDE3 Acqua theme. One feature I would like to see added is a "Pretend Update World", any chance on it making it into a future release ?

Sincerely,
Dan Naumov

One thing I noticed on my machine was that the process didn't get cleaned up
after I exited the app. A "ps axc" showed all the instances that I had
started. I also got the crash some else mentioned; however, I am not using
the keramik theme/style.

Cheers,
Russ Tennant

Very nice job! This is the kind of thing that makes Free Software so cool ...
a nice app to let us manage things in either a GUI overview form, or from the
command line, or both, as we choose. I will certainly make use of this app,
with luck it'll make it into the portage tree before too long [grin].

Distros like Gentoo and folks like you make everyday seem like Christmas :-)

Jean.

cute! on my wishlist is a "show installed ebuilds only" and the
complement, "show uninstalled ebuilds only". this would make
cleaning up the installed base doable. these days, with "--update"
basically just adding itself, not removing the old one, I've got so
many duplicates installed that it's outright stupid. and manual
cleaning via qpkg and emerge commandlines aren't that fun.

(yes, reverse dependencies and --update is the correct solution, but
  we don't have that. yet.)

We are going to make a "show installed ebuilds", but we don't know
the use of "show uninstalled ebuilds".
A pkg-clean is also on our TODO, but we don't have 48h/day. ;)

We also have a anon cvs:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@foo-bar.dyndns.org/cvsroot login
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@foo-bar.dyndns.org/cvsroot co kportagemaster

oh, I want to see what I _can_ install. sometimes I'm looking to
see if a certain ebuild exists, other times I'm just looking for
something to install and test. ;-)

greatness, and I know how that goes. sigh. there just isn't enough

as in "feel free to commit patches"? uhm, I don't do C++. well,
okay, I won't do it for money. maybe I'll do it for something like

hello hannes,

ultragreat work!!! i'm using gentoo linux for long time now and with this tool
it seems to be the easiest distro of all. in the beginning all people said,
that gentoo is not a linux for newbies. now i say, it couldn't be easier to
install a linux distribution then gentoo linux. ok, well the config is harder
but if the users will learn something...

hmmm, i didn't find any bugs in the software, so i couldn't report one. if i
find some bugs i will report it.

the only thing i'm missing is emerge -pu world. but i think other people said
it already....

for the future there maybe could be an ebuild editor and a tool to create new
ebuilds directly in the portage tree??? (like the gtk tool ebuilded)

GREAT WORK!!! ;-)

regards
hanez... ;-)

I just got 0.2 from portage. thank you for a great package. after
a bit of a review and usage my suggested upgrades would be:

   1) some way of parsing the output from emerge so we get some sort
of readable output. \r-usage doesn't go well with the current
      version.

   2) after I've done an action I'd like to be at the same spot in the
tree, with the same view that I had earlier. now the tree
collapses and resets itself after doing it's thing. this is
rather annoying. the most correct behavior is probably to let
jobs just run, and not interfere with the GUI at all. this
does, however, pose some other troubles, like transparently
updating the tree(s). but it would be neat. expanded to
allowing several tasks at the same time sometime into the
      future. ;-)

   3) we have "all", and "merged" panes. I can live without the
      "non-merged" one, but can I get '*' instead of a '+' for
categories including packages that have duplicates installed?
that would make kportagemaster a nice graphical alternative to
      pkg-clean.

   4) I'm not big on pop-up windows telling me about status of
things. a statusbar-based progressbar might suffice, but it's
      no biggie.

anyhow, in case you're in doubt it's all very nice work!

What sort of parsing do you mean?

This feature we discussed several times, but it's hard to update the tree
transparently. So we pushed this task back in TODO. ;)

I don't see any possibility to change the [+], butwill try to do something
similar.

something to make the output from actions sort of readable. the
simplest fix would be to be able to get the widget that the output
gets pasted into to understand \r.

oh, and could you make it possible to set the foreground and
  background colors in the widgets?

okay, nice to know you're on it. in the meantime, just making the
menu return to its previous state would be very nice indeed.

great! maybe some colors on the [+] indicating status for that
category / ebuild might work. red for "none merged", green for "one
merged" and yellow for "several merged".

I've been using kportagemaster for a while now and I really enjoy
the "surfing" feeling of looking through the ebuilds.

it's nice to come back to the Gentoo community after a while and
find that things are getting even nicer. now, if someone has some
free time to sell me so I could get back into portage. :/

Will try to expand the tree to the last selected ebuild.

Yellow is already used as "injected".
If you want, you can see how I the cvs-version looks:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@foo-bar.dyndns.org/cvsroot login
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@foo-bar.dyndns.org/cvsroot co kportagemaster

I haven't the foggiest, sorry. and with the amount of stuff
happening with an ebuild, building a fullyfledged parser is a lost
cause. I'll see if I can come up with anything.

  ah, okay. smart!

hm, I get this at the end of my ./configure.

fast creating ./Makefile
can't open ././Makefile.in: No such file or directory
fast creating doc/Makefile
can't open ./doc/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
fast creating doc/en/Makefile
can't open ./doc/en/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
fast creating kportagemaster/Makefile
can't open ./kportagemaster/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
fast creating kportagemaster/images/Makefile
can't open ./kportagemaster/images/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
fast creating po/Makefile
can't open ./po/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
creating config.h
config.h is unchanged

am I doing something very weird?
