Hey there,
Here's an interesting idea I heard on IRC (from kraylus): provide a
console-based IRC client on the install CD so you can immediately chat on
#gentoo for install problems. (with a little entry in install.txt that
explains how to use it)
Only, I don't know anything about console-based IRC apps, so I wouldn't
know which one is best. pmjorange suggested irssi.
Thoughts?
Wout.

Sounds like a nice idea.

irssi of course :-)
It seems that the most popular text mode irc-clients are
irssi, bitchx and epic/ircii. Both irssi and bitchx offer
more features than epic/ircii. Bitchx is two times larger
than irssi.
Of course the best approach would be customisable install CDs so that
we can have irssi and vi on the install CD and not annoy the users
with a different taste.

Sounds like a good idea to me... We'd probably have to create a new user on
the install CD, though. We don't want to encourage our users to IRC as root,
now do we? Perhaps an `alias irssi='su - gentoo-install -c irssi'` could be
an idea.

Yeah, I agree that irssi is the best choice.
Best Regards,

It could also be interesting to add links (the text-mode browser) as
well, to let users fetch documentation on www.gentoo.org.

little?

irssi is a good no-nonsense choice.
though a config and the stuff mentioned by Jonas should be included
(non-root environment).

And in the end I would need to install Gentoo, but merely boot the CD.
I hope you are _not_ serious about mpg.
links and Lynx are reasonable, but the cd-player has been invented.
