you might place the following at the beginning of the install
documentation:

Note: using the "date" command you should ensure that your clock is
accurate.  If your clock is set too far in the past, portage can have
problems making packages.

my clock was set two weeks in the past (I did not notice) and so one of
the builds (wget) got into a loop because the configure script was dated
in the future.  I had to stop it, figure out what was wrong, and
restart.  Alternatively, you might include a ntpdate, and have the user
set the date by ntp as part of the install.
