Lately, an emerge --update system wants to install netkit-telnetd,
which somehow made it into /usr/portage/profiles/default-1.0/packages.
Any cogent reason why we need a telnetd daemon in base?

where else would you get a telnet application from?
And... WHY is this a DEVELOPER question?

From a telnet client package :) I don't like to have telnetd installed either
tho you need not start it of course. Also if you really need a telnet client
you can install the telnetd package anyway so there's no need to habe it in
the base packages.
Don't ask me when I last started a telnetd it's long ago. I don't need a
telnet client either. If I need one I can install it but thats nothing you
_need_ to have installed especially in times of ssh. I'd better understand if
netcat was in the base packages for a distro aimed at network pro's.
