Hello gentoo-dev,

I`m writing this via my wifes machine as I`m stuck with a load of
errors on my gentoo build (fresh).

I`ve followed the install.txt to the letter, but, when issuing
cd /usr/portage then scripts/bootstrap.sh I`m met with a load of
errors, simply put, it doesnt build anything and aborts.

Because its on another machine I cannot send you the output, but
most errors appear to be python related "maintainer" pops up a lot
too (this is with and without "maintainer="yes" in /etc/make.conf.

I am a Slackware user by defualt so building packages is nothing new
to me but this has me stumped.

Please help, as i`m keen to try gentoo! Abd once I have a working
system you can be sure I`ll donate :-D

  Thank you.

Oh one last thing, please reply to Jeepster@gmx.co.uk NOT the reply
  address in this email.

Can you send us your make.conf? (any changes you made that is.

And/Or CTRL-C the bootstrap and send us the first error you see?

Hope I can help,
Jared H.

Does anybody read FAQ nowadays?!?

You can:
a) download stage3 CD, that will have some "full" set of packages compiled.
or
b) download any install CD (basic 16MB one is recommended)
and then, download all the sources you want to install
burn that on a CD (or put on any other media)
when time comes (after unpacking stage1 or stage2/3 (whichever is used)), just
put these sources under /usr/portage/distfiles.
In order to get portage tree itself download daily portage archive (please see
FAQ or even install instructions for locations. And all of these vital
documents are referenced on the main site http://www.gentoo.org).

George

Hi all -
All that I can say is *arg*.
I was working on my machine last night, and it hard crashed. Upon restart,
it seems that /var/state/init.d/* is invalid (shows processess that are
started (but not really), etc) and therefore I cannot boot and my rootfs
stays ro (annoying). I can get into my system via single user, but that is
worthless thanks to my ro root fs. I tried copying /var/state/init.d from
the livecd into my own /var/state/init.d, but no joy there. Any ideas?

Cheers,
//zhen
