I'm trying to get ggz-kde-client[1] to build. it requires KDE2 /
QT2, which is sort of okay. I do:

./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/qt/2

and it finds qt2 as it should. _but_, it doesn't have a way of
being told where to find KDE, at least not according to ./configure
--help. I've tried --with-kde-dir=/usr/kde/2, and to set the
enviroment variables KDE_DIR and KDEDIR, and done a few other tests
like that. looking at some KDE-based ebuilds shows me "need
kde-2.2.2" and "inherit kde". I've tried to get an idea of what is
happening when doing this, and looked at the eclasses, but well, I'm
not really sure why, or how, I should attack this issue. any
  pointers are _very_ welcome.

Hi

Check ebuilds like kmerlin, qtella, and other KDE ebuilds...
You should use inheriting to build those ebuilds, "with need-kde 2"
Just check it out, it's not too complicated to use.. I guess there are some
guides available for that as well :o)

See ya, hope this kinda helps

Hi,

I hope you read this - sorry about the delay, I'm catching up with my gentoo-*
reading. You should read my eclass-howto, you'll find it in the developer
docs section on gentoo.org.
