I'm trying to track down this problem myself ( because I can't live without xemacs )
Andreas, did you remerge xemacs once you recompiled the older kernel?
This is bug 1574 in bugzilla, non?
Also, in another unrelated problem ( except that it relates to xemacs ), gtk-xemacs breaks the
sandbox.
or at least that's what i assume "ACCESS DENIED open_wr:<yadda><yadda><yadda>" means.
Where's reading on sandbox available?

I had the same problem. And procinfo segfaulted, too. I emerged and
compiled older linux kernel sources (2.4.17-r5) and the problems
vanished...
