Letting her go as a root is a bad idea IMNSHO.
Better use in inittab something like: 
su -c "/bin/bash -i" grandma :-). 
(and of course ~/.bashrc should call startx with .xinitrc setup properly.)
Well, anyway, please disregard, we had way too much talk on this already :-).
