I noticed that there are 2 jdk's.
1 in dev-lang maintained by Achim Gottinger <achim@gentoo.org>
and
1 in dev-java (also blackdown) maintained by Karl Trygve Kalleberg
<karltk@gentoo.org>
the second in dev-java seems to be cleaner, e.g. has PROVIDE tags, and
also sets the env.-variables right.
But "emerge jdk" will take the first 1.
Is there a reason for maintaining the same program twice?

The ones in dev-java are the right ones (there are actually three full JDKs
in there -- Sun's, IBM's and Balckdown's). You'll want to specify which JDK
you want, e.g. 'emerge blackdown-jdk'
I would guess that a JDK still exists in dev-lang simply because of an
oversite. If there is not a bug in Bugzilla covering that already, perhaps
there should be.

The first one is deprecated and has been removed. You should update your
local reposity by doing emerge rsync.
