Hello
I posted this in gentoo-user, but got no answer, so i repost it here if it can be useful.. Tell me if i should have not.
Thanks in advance
-------------------
Hello
I installed gentoo linux a few days ago, i don't know if it's the right
list to post this report, but we'll see. ;)
The install runned fine.
For Information, I'm using a Asus A7V266-E mainboard (KT266A chipset)
with fr keyboard.
Here's what I noted :
KDM
kdm shows users like root, www & co, but not the normal user. I guess
there is an inversion somewhere
XSANE
latest xsane is 0.84. latest in gentoo is 0.77, quite old. Is there a
particular reason for keeping an old version?
BASESYSTEM
basesystem wants me to install isapnptools, but i haven't used a isa
cards for year! i don't even have an isa slot! i think hotplug would be
a much better thing to have in core system than isapnptools.. how to
tell emerge i don't want it with update (without having to do it at each
emerge rsync) ?
GKRELLMMS
emerge gkrellmms fails with this message :
"Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge x11-misc/gkrellmms-0.5.5 to /

EURO SIGN
Can't have it in kde (even with iso8859-15 character set selected), and
don't have it everywhere in gnome apps. For example in evolution, i have
it in to, cc, and subject fields, but not in the message window. I guess
i'm missing something somewhere.. but.. where? :)
LANGUAGE
Is there any way to have non-english language in other apps than kde
itself?
REALPLAYER
There are some realplayer 9 (aka RealOne) beta floating around real.com
site, and it works well.
EBUILDS
How do we find the list (and description?) of packages that can be
installed? I'm talking of something equivalent to rpmdrake for example
RPM
rpm is present so i guess it's supported.. but why using rpm 3.0.6 as
4.0.3 is the latest version?
ALSA & OSS EMULATION
I have a SB Live! card (emu10k1) and alsa. When using oss application i
have noise at the start of the play, for about one second, then it plays
fine.. But it's really annoying since i have that at each song change in
xmms. I tried aalsa plugin, but the sound is strange (stretched or
something..) So if anyone has an idea.. (my on-board sound chips are
disabled in the bios)
EVOLUTION & SPELLCHECKING
I guess i need aspell (or other?) and aspell-fr for spellchecking in
french, but there's only de..
OLD-GTK-THEMES
emerge old-gtk-themes gives :
"Calculating dependencies ...done!

Is there any other package that gives themes for gnome apps?
OF : DIVX
Divx 5.0 is out, do someone has info of support for it in linux apps?
Thanks in advance for your help

I don't think so. Upgrade the ebuild file and send it to bugs.gentoo.org if
you want it in gentoo

Take a look at /usr/portage/profiles directory. There is a lot of interesting
stuff there : package.mask for the packages that you don't want, or
default/packages for the list of default packages.
You can create your own profile too, and put there only the packages you want.

This is a bug in gkrellmms. If you compile it from sources, you get the
same error. Try on their mailing list (if they have one)...

Yes, use LANG environnement variable :
maciek@dune maciek $ export LANG="fr_FR"
maciek@dune maciek $ ls /rien
ls: /rien: Aucun fichier ou répertoire de ce type
maciek@dune maciek $ export LANG="en_EN"
maciek@dune maciek $ ls /rien
ls: /rien: No such file or directory

All the packages are organised in /usr/portage tree. You can use find (or
locate) to browse them.

Gentoo is NOT a rpm distribution. The rpm ebuild is put in portage in order
to let you install some (almost always proprietary) software distributed only
in rpms files. Personnally, I don't know any of these that needs rpm 4.
Anyway, I am sure that your ebuild will be welcome ;+)

Attach it to a bug report or something?
Will try to read some build doc soon to be able to do something useful.
Anyway, renaming the current xsane ebuild file to the current version
and ebuild digest-ing it seems to be working. I guess it would be the
same with xchat (1.8.8 just released -- untested)

Theses files seem to be overwritten at rsync. I will search the docs
instead of making noise here :). Thanks anyway.

Oh, yes, thanks.. Btw, where is the better place to put it in conf
files?
Anyway, it doesn't seem to work for everything, at least not for
evolution. Maybe something missing elsewhere?

Yep, but sometimes some package names are not really explicit. I was
thinking of some graphical tool to browse thru some descriptions.

Yes, you're probably right, I'm just of the "use latest version if
possible" school ;-)
> Anyway, I am sure that your ebuild will be welcome ;+)
I'll try to learn how to deal with it (i mean, better than only copying
them -- damn that thing is easy ;) to do something useful
Some other things : i receive all messages of this list twice, but i
subscribed only once.. A bit strange. need help here :)
Can someone point me to an _easy_ guide to configure sshd please? I'm
having some troubles with it (can't login, maybe key problems) and since
I was used to Mandrake "PnP" for this, i'm a bit lost ;)
Thanks again

Humm.. spoke too some.. Parts of evolution are translated : folders
name, some menu names in the main window (not in new message window),
but not the rest : buttons, other menus, etc... strange, isn't it?

Hi,
I haven't seen anything in bugs or this list about this, so here is the
news:
CERT have issued an advisory about OpenSSH, the bug in question enables
existing users to gain root privelidges.
The advisory is here: http://www.pine.nl/advisories/pine-cert-20020301.txt
The fix is to upgrade to the latest OpenSSH (3.1p1) ASAP.
May I politely suggest that a new ebuild be constructed post-haste? :)
Anyway, for those at risk, I have constructed an emergency ebuild and
digest file, so you may upgrade immediately.
The files can be found here: http://www.cdavies.org/gentoo/
Put the digest file in /usr/portage/net-misc/openssh/files and the
ebuild in /usr/portage/net-misc/openssh and rerun emerge openssh.
If anyone thinks it is worthwhile, I will also post this message to the
gentoo users list, but at present I'm not going to do that.
Thanks,
C.Davies

Hi,
Yep. Noticed that a few minutes after I sent the e-mail. I must have
done my rsync before this package was added.
My Bad.
